Bali Travel InformationBali travel is somewhat arduous for most vacationers, but well worth it once you get there. From Australia, expect flight time at minimum to be 9 hours...from Tokyo, 7 hours...and from the United States, a minimum of 15 hours (although the reality from the U.S. is that it will be 20+ hours. For example, from my home in Michigan, my shortest schedule is usually 27 hours). From Los Angeles, the distance to Bali is approximately 7800 miles...that gives you an idea of how far away you really are traveling! From outside of Indonesia: International points of entry into Bali are the Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar and the sea ports at Padang Bali and Benoa. (Note, however, that the sea ports are largely for the purpose of shipping goods, not people!)
Note: There are no direct flights from New Zealand, Europe or the USA to Bali. You must go via Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Taipei, Tokyo or Sydney. Within Indonesia, transfer to Bali: By plane--there are many airlines that serve Bali's airport from multiple points in Indonesia, including Jakarta, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta. Click here to learn more. By train--You can take a train from Java, but be warned, the trains are very slow. (Note, as well, that there are no trains on the island of Bali.) Take the Bima II or the Mitiara Selatan which go from Jakarta to Surabaya. From there, you would continue by bus to Ketapang, then take the ferry to Gilimanuk and a bus to Denpasar.
By bus-The bus malam (night bus) from Java is a cheap option, but beware-it has its risks. Travellers report unbearable noxious fumes, robberies, and reckless bus drivers.
