East Bali, from Pura Besakih to Candi Dasa to Mt. Lempuyang
Ultimately, east Bali is a treasure for those seeking peace and a variety of experiences with nature. Several dive operations are located here, as the underwater sea life is abundant. Home of the famous Mount Agung, Bali’s “mother mountain,” there are numerous opportunities to experience Bali’s unique cultural temples as well as the natural environment of flora, fauna and tropical forest scenery. The village of Tulamben, besides offering a magnificent view of Mt. Agung from the west side, is a mecca for those seeking to dive in Bali. Off the shores of Tulamben is the wreck of the ship US Liberty from World War II, and is an excellent place for divers searching for abundant marine life. Candi Dasa is a sleepy beach resort town with white sand beaches. Although there are many luxury and budget accommodations here, the pace is much, much slower than the southern areas. The most famous Bali Aga Village, also known as Tenganan Pegeringsingan, is located approximately 2 miles (3km) north of Candidasa, and is a very popular tourist destination. The exclusive version of double-woven ikat, geringsing, is made here, and it is a place that has been extensively studied by ethnologists and scientists of all types, in part due to suspicions of a cannibalistic past. Even if you do not plan to stay in East Bali, it is well worth at least a day trip to visit the many areas that are discussed in this page (plus the many that are not!). It is a different view of the Balinese lifestyle....a historic, relaxing, and beautiful view!
