Where is Bali?...a question I frequently hear when I start talking about my favorite vacation destination (which is often). Many people have heard of the beautiful island of Bali, but really have no idea where it is. Bali is located in Southeast Asia, one of 17,508 islands that form part of an archipelago between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. (Only approximately 6,000 of those islands are inhabited.) It is one of 30 provinces in the country Indonesia, which straddles the equator and thus has a hot, tropical climate. Within Indonesia, Bali is part of the “Lesser Sunda Islands,” located at the eastern tip of Jakarta island. It is physically close to Timor, Australia and Thailand. On the map below, you will see a little blue pin...that's the relative location of the island Bali to the entire country of Indonesia. View Larger Map While Indonesia’s total size is slightly less than 3 times the size of the state of Texas, Bali itself is a very manageable 55 miles from north to south (88.5 km) and 90 miles from east to west (145 km).
